"The white water will likely never return to normal. It is likely to churn even more so in the future. What’s essential to our success now, is our ability to adapt."
CHANGE IS THE ONLY CONSTANT
A Note from John
Some years ago I had the opportunity to introduce one of my heroes, Stephen Covey, author of The Seven Habits to speak to a group of NYC business leaders. Stephen described the current turbulent business environment as “white water”. When a participant raised the question of how long it would take for business to return to normal, Stephen smiled and said "the white water will likely never return to normal. It is likely to churn even more so in the future. What’s essential to our success now, is our ability to adapt."
I will never forget his response and how true it is today. As leaders we must constantly navigate the unpredictable white water and help those around us adapt to what is next.
During my years in business I often found the white water of business activity getting in the way of my team’s productivity as well as my own. Being upended by change, whether it's people, process, or systems, is a frustrating time for all.
